Genspace Biomaterials Studio

Non-Profit Research Group
Roles: Lead Organizer, Creative Director

A biomaterials studios based in the communal Genspace lab.

The Genspace Biomaterials Studio is a community driven biomaterial research group at Genspace. The group’s focus is to explore, create, and innovate the intersection between materials, biology, and design. I lead every aspect of this group, from organizing and internal infrastructure to designing products, alongside participants from a range of backgrounds.

Brand Graphic Guidelines

This group is the entry way for people to get into their own science-material projects and I created brand guidelines and graphics to reflect this mentality.

Active Projects

Currently the group has been focused on a couple projects involving mycelium, the lightweight roots of mushrooms. One project has been creating a large-scale spatial installation for a rock climbing gym made of mycelium. Below are some early stage concepts (as well as our concept deck).

The other project is the creation of a large 4’ mycelium calligraphy disk that will be used for the Sunset Park Railroad documentary with Huang Xiang. The intention is create a piece that will naturally, slowly degrade over the season.

Biomaterial Workshops

I’ve also extended the group outside of the Genspace lab, teaching students and interested adults about biomaterials in local colleges such as NYU, Cornell, and Parsons.
